Description

Vancouver Urban Forestry’s Intern Program offers youth gainful employment in the parks,  natural areas,  and public spaces within Vancouver.  The intern will work 24 5-hour shifts,  up to 120 hours (or more,  depending on program type),  with up to eight other crew members.  Job functions vary depending on season:  Spring and Summer are tree care (mulching,  weeding,  watering,  pruning)  and monitoring seasons;  Fall and Winter are planting and maintenance (mulching weeding,  watering,  pruning)  seasons.

Urban Forestry is a program of the City of Vancouver Public Works Department.  This position will work closely with program staff to learn many aspects of urban forestry and how the program strives to maximize benefits trees provide while minimizing conflicts to assure a healthy,  green Vancouver,  with community support and participation.

Responsibilities

  • Interns will assist Urban Forestry with tree planting and other green space stewardship events on Saturdays,  volunteers may be present
  • Weekday activities include preparing for tree planting events (i.e.,  unloading &  organizing trees),  mulching trees,  assisting with pruning,  Urban Forestry staff tree-planting events,  conducting volunteer outreach,  and more
  • Communicate regularly and clearly with supervisors both in person and by email
  • Ability to listen and carry-out instructions

  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions,  on various terrain

  • Comply with policies and procedures of Public Works Urban Forestry programs/area of assignment
  • Individuals are expected to work in a manner consistent with the City of Vancouver Operating Principles;  Work and act as a team player in all interactions with other City employees and crew members;  Provide a high level of customer service at all times;  Project and maintain a positive image with those contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications

  • Ages 15 -  24 preferred
  • Reliable transportation to work locations in Vancouver and/or City Hall (415 W 6th St,  Vancouver,  WA 98660)
  • Experience working on or leading a team
  • Work or volunteer experience involving plant or tree care,  landscaping,  environmental justice,  or similar field(s)
